At a basic level, the animations are more realistic, and the players have smarter off-ball movement. There are a greater number of small animations that add visual variety as matches play out. This year, the focus is on player personality and expression on the pitch. The graphics remain simplistic-the series aims to run on a wide range of machines, and fidelity just isn’t the focus-but the player models look more human. The match engine is always the subject of focus, as it steadily improves (most of the time, anyway) with each Football Manager release in terms of visuals, animations, and simulation accuracy. On-Pitch Improvements Bring Out Player Personality Still, these new features are valued improvements that let you take a club in your own direction, rather than being stuck with the transfer decisions that your team made in the summer. The developer, Sports Interactive, only updates squads at release and after the winter transfer window. However, it doesn’t solve all the issues. This is a much more flexible way to start Football Manager and speaks to some problems that the community has fixed over the years via downloadable rosters. In this mode, only players who were on the club at that specific time will appear on your roster. Alternatively, you can select Your World and choose a start date. In addition to that default option, there's now a Real World feature that lets the in-game athletes start the season with their original clubs and only join your team on the same date they joined in real life. In the past, a new save used the latest real-world squads that Football Manager had in its database, even if certain players weren’t actually on the team at the start of the season. The other new and welcome pre-game feature lets you load squads into your save in a few different ways. It's a great option if you don’t want to leave behind your cadre of carefully recruited youth players. This is a massive boon to Football Manager 2023 die-hards who like simulating matches far into the future. Football Manager 2024: New Ways to Playįor the first time, you can load a save file from the previous year’s game. This Football Manager 2024 review focuses on the new additions. My Football Manager 2018 review has a deeper explanation and overview of the core concepts. That might sound dull, but the series is a deep and captivating simulation, and a fantastic engine for emergent narrative. You don’t play the matches instead, you comb through sheets of tactics, instructions, data, training, scouting, and transfers. However, a single person managing a team and executing tactics is simply more fun and makes for a good video game experience. This is a role rarely performed by the same person in the real world recruitment departments, chairmen, board members, and directors of football now truly run a club. A History of Successįootball Manager is a complex simulation series that tasks you with managing and coaching a football club. Football Manager 2024 is a stellar jumping-on point for new players or a sweet upgrade if you’re a few editions behind, earning it our Editors' Choice award PC games. It’s difficult to truly revamp an annualized title, but the many new features here make for a noticeably improved, robust experience. The previous series entry was a bit lacking in headline features following the excellent 2022 release, but 2024’s many additions-including carrying over a save file from last year’s game, displaying more player personalities in the in-match engine, and offering multiple ways to start a new game-make it the most comprehensive release yet. Football Manager 2024 ($59.99) brings improvements and new features that make a tangible difference to the sports-sim experience. Soccer's most popular simulation isn’t resting on its laurels.
